May 2020

Greetings,

On behalf of our entire team at Western States Cancer Research NCORP, I bring you well wishes as we move into this newest phase of navigating the COVID-19 Pandemic. Safer in Place brings us a bit more freedom to move around, yet continued diligence is necessary if we want to prevent the spread of the virus. To that end, our team continues to work remotely except for essential trips to our office where we are observing all the CDC and state requirements for a safe work environment. We feel fortunate that we can work from home and, as Governor Polis and our local mayors are asking, we will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

I want to take a moment here and thank the WSCR-NCORP staff for their discipline and commitment to our work. We continue to open studies, consent patients, work with our physicians and their staffs. While being able to work remotely may be a blessing (and it is certainly safer), it is not necessarily easy. There is a tendency to feel isolated and even the simplest task is made more complicated by the extra steps required by multiple communication platforms. Our team has managed to remain high functioning and to stay connected to each other and to our patients, our physicians and our remote colleagues. I feel very privileged and proud to be associated with this remarkable group of individuals.

Even in the most difficult times (perhaps even more so in these difficult times), expressing gratitude is essential. We are incredibly grateful to our donors who are continuing to support us despite unstable economic conditions. As an expression of our gratitude we are initiating a “Compassion Campaign” which involves phone calls to all our donors to simply say “thank you” and see how they are faring during this strange time. If we bring a smile to even one person a day by checking in, we will be smiling too.

We hope you and your loved ones are safe and healthy. Please let us know if we can be of assistance in any way.

Take care of yourself and each other.

Warm regards,

Lisa A. Switzer, M.A.
